Ohio SGO Tax Credit

Ohio’s Scholarship Granting Organization (SGO) tax credit program allows individual Ohio taxpayers to redirect a portion of their state income taxes — dollar for dollar — to certified nonprofit organizations that fund private school scholarships for K-12 students, at no net out-of-pocket cost. Donors receive a 100% dollar-for-dollar credit against their Ohio state tax liability, capped at $750 for a single taxpayer and $1,500 for a couple filing jointly, and the credit is non-refundable. The program has seen strong growth, with nearly 24,000 returns claiming $26.8 million in credits in 2023, and with the new federal EFTC arriving in 2027 offering an additional $1,700 federal credit, Ohio taxpayers have an unprecedented opportunity to stack their educational giving impact.
