Course content:

  • Virtualization, what’s it all about (What makes virtualization possible, What a hypervisor is all about, and the anatomy of a VM)
  • ESXi 6.0 – What it does, and how to set it up. (Install within Workstation).
  • Controlling ESXi (vSphere Client, vCLI, VMware Powershell, and vCenter)
  • VMware Security – Configuring the Firewall, Time, and Groups and users to include AD Integration
  • Building of Virtual Machines – Building from scratch, Cloning,P2V, and third party cloning
  • Fine Turning VMs – tips and tricks for max performance
  • Virtualization of the infrastructure – A look at best practices fo Domain Controllers, Email Servers and other Systems.
  • Overview of Storage – Different types of storage to include DAS, NAS, and iSCSI
  • Setup and use vCenter – vCenter Alarms
  • Update Manager, High Availability, Fault Tolerance, and Disaster Planning for Virtualization
  • VMware backups, Backup softwares (to include Veeam, VM Explorer, and VMprotect 6)
  • Basic Troubelshooting of Virtualized environments.

Course Pre-requisite:

The student needs to be familiar with basic system administration in either Windows Server or Linux.

Book Information: Teacher will provide class notes and suggest reference books.

System Requirements for doing Labs:

  • Processor:  Dual Core. Must be a x64 processor with hardware-assisted virtualization support (Intel VT-x or AMD-V)
  • Memory: 4GB RAM
  • Disk Space: 100GB of free hard drive space
  • OS: Windows XP, Vista, 7. 64 bit version recommended.
  • Be able to provide OS for 32 bit OS for practice VMs. (Windows 2000 to 2008)
